I read from Kompas Online* this morning that Reza was found missing since Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004. Reza (Artamevia) is a famous singer from Indonesia. I like her deep, jazzy voice. When she married Adjie (Massaid) another famous celebrity, many people thought that it’s perfect,… two good-looking people with talents and bright careers in show biz.
Just recently, couple months ago actually, people learnt that Reza asked for a divorce to end their 5-year marriage that bore two beautiful little daughters. Reza has been opened with the cause of her troublesome marriage that made her decide to end her marriage with Adjie. Although she didn’t go into details most women have felt a deep sympathy to her case. She begged to meet her daughters but couldn’t. Adjie was not even budged a bit to her plea. What kind of husband or father could be so indifferent when it comes to his loved ones? Even when he stated reasons on why he wants to maintain his marriage and he only agrees to let Reza meet their daugthers under his terms… I could feel that it’s a lie… a façade to hide the real Adjie.
Lately Reza has agreed to participate in a TV drama about a broken marriage… a storyline that resembles her marriage life. She is the supporting actress in this feature. Right after it, Adjie through his lawyer reported Reza’s affair with a prominent government’s officer during their marriage to the police… and he challenges her to do ‘sumpah pocong**‘ if she really didn’t do it.
I just read their stories from many news websites. I know that it’s still ‘she said vs. he said’, and that the law presumes innocence until proven guilty ~ but couldn’t help a sympathy for Reza. I don’t know her, but as a woman I believe she told the truth. If it’s not the truth why Adjie has to act so childish and immature. The truth cannot be hid. Only when one’s threatened then one would resort to violence and wicked tricks to cover the truth. Isn’t that so?
Reza’s lawyer disclosed a threatening SMS that Reza got frequently lately: “He Reza, lu sampai berani mengancam Adjie lagi mati lu… liat aja, aku tidak pernah bekerja main-main dan aku sudah mengumpulkan semua jin saya untuk membuat lu cacat mental.” Loosely translated: “Hi Reza, if you dare to threat Adjie again you’ll be dead… let’s see, I’m serious and I have gathered all my genies to make you mentally retarded.”
Ah… Reza… apparently the domestic violence toward women in the Indonesia’s paternalistic society is still prevalent. If it could happen to Reza, a well-known figure, then it could happen to any woman.
Reza wherever you are, I hope you’re fine. I believe God’s watching you. I hope one day you’ll find your true happiness.

Sumpah pocong** is a traditional law, an oath of innocence by one’s wrapped in a shroud.
