I got a New Year Greeting from my friend Nancy and Nelson, her husband. I quote their message as follows:
We would like to share our reflections and a special New Year’s message with you.
For both of us, 2006 was a year of transition and finding renewed inspiration in the small and large things in life: time spent with family and friends, moments of silence in nature, the kindness of others, and as always, the perseverance and creativity of people struggling for justice in our world.
Two weeks ago, Nancy returned from a memorable visit with her family in Indonesia. During her stay, she received a gift from her aunt Thian Bwee, who has been doing automatic writing for a number of years. Through this unusual practice, Thian Bwee has become more connected with the divine and more at peace with herself, others and the world. Her gift to Nancy was a collection of writings in English (most are in Bahasa Indonesia), so we would like to share one of our favourite passages with you:
“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then our world will become harmonious.”
May we all live and work to make this happen in 2007.
Wishing you a very happy New Year filled with love, peace and joy.
Nelson & Nancy
After Nancy completed the interview to a jazz singer for CBC’s The Global Village program on the night of December 16, 2006 we continued talking over gado-gado and krupuk. Then, she told me a story about her aunt Thian Bwee and automatic writing.
Follow these links for info on automatic writing or just Google it yourself:
What is Automatic Writing? Automatic writing is the process, or product, of writing material that does not come from the conscious thoughts of the writer. The writer’s hand forms the message, and the person is unaware of what will be written. It is sometimes done in a trance state. Other times the writer is aware (not in a trance) of their surroundings but not of the actions of their writing hand.
I would like to share this story because I believe that we all can learn from it:
Thian Bwee visited her younger brother in Canada couple years ago. She liked Canada’s vast and majestic outdoor and was really touched by its beauty when she was in Canadian Rockies (Alberta Province). The outdoor beauty touched her inner being to the point that she couldn’t help but shed tears. She said that it was the best experience she had had so far.
After returned to Ottawa she contacted her former tenant, a student from Canada that had studied in Indonesia and then resided in Quebec. She visited the former tenant’s house and stayed with the family. There and then by coincidence they brought her to a gypsy – who told her about her past, present, and future. She didn’t feel anything special then. And, nothing special happened right after she returned to Jakarta.
A lot had happened to her in her past – her husband died, she had to take care of her autistic older brother by herself right now, etc. The stress of life has weighed down on her and she was really long for an inner peace to carry on living. While she’s in Canada she brought many books about religion and self-healing. One night she read one religious book and in the book there’s a section about automatic writing. She wondered whether she could do it too. Out of curiosity she tried what the book told about practicing automatic writing. She held the pen and then… automatically her hand and the pen started to move. She dropped the pen and looked at the scribbles. She decided to tell her daughter about it tomorrow.
The next day she tried it again – during the day. She asked her daughter to stay with her and be the witness of what would or would not happen. It started with scribbles and then came “Hello”. She was scared and dropped her pen but then encouraged herself to continue…
“Who are you?” – a spirit from an old time Canada
“What’s your name?” – a foreign and not Indonesian’s name
Both Thian Bwee and the spirit then get used to each other through the automatic writing. Thian Bwee learnt about the spirit’s life. The spirit told her about its Master and that the Master sent this spirit to her. And, that the Master would communicate to her directly and the spirit would soon left when it finished its mission.
Right after this spirit left… she started to write about biblical verses in old English language – a language that’s familiar but still foreign to her. She never stopped… her hands kept writing and writing. In just weeks she could produce a thick book of biblical verses and their interpretation. Eventually she felt at peace and would like to share this with her family and friends. The yearning heart has found what it’s been seeking out for so long…
Nancy showed me the writing when we met and talked a day before she departed to Toronto. I was really touched and felt a soft-cool air down my spine. Wonder what happens if I try it…
