I’m in the office now. It happened because somehow the document I sent on Friday has not reached the recipient yet and I needed to send it again. (Oh, I hate it when the corporate network system doesn’t work well.)
This morning, I got text messages from my colleague saying that he didn’t receive any e-mail and document that I sent on Friday. I told him that I was sure the document got sent because I replicated the system couple times after sending it on Friday – and it’s there in my Sent folder. I told him to wait couple hours because the network usually was very slow. (Although it’s strange for me… it’s already 14 hours passed since I sent it. What kind of network is it?)
I know he needs it for Monday morning meeting and with Asia ahead of North America it means he should have the document by now. I was babysitting my nieces and couldn’t just leave. The document is in my laptop in the office and I don’t have it with me.
I told my sister that I needed to go as soon as possible and I couldn’t take care of the kids and go with her family in the afternoon because I had to go to the office. She asked me whether I have the approval to enter the building – because of some security procedures in most business buildings here that requires company’s approval for working on weekend. It means even I have the pass to enter the office I may not be able to use the lift to my office floor.
I thought I’d try my chance. It’s weekend and it takes longer from my sister’s house to the office. O, I hate it.
I swiped my pass card when I entered the lift. It blipped but the lift didn’t move. I tried it couple times before I gave up and went to the security.
I told the security guy that I needed to go to the 7th floor to work but my pass card failed to work. The security guy asked the company name, my ID and my pass card – to check whether they’re matched with their database. Sure enough he couldn’t find anything that’s matched mine. Then came another security guy. I had to explain my situation again. They went through the standard check again and later tried to call the designated person in my company that should be contacted for things like this. It seemed the numbers are not updated.
Then they asked for my business card. Good Lord I have it with me!
One of them decided to go with me up to the 7th floor. He said he’d wait until I log-in successfully to the computer to prove that I really work in the company I mentioned to them. He apologized that he should do it as part of their standard procedure. Sure thing! I understand.
I chatted with this security guy while I waited for my laptop to run the usual routine before I could log-in. Josh is his name. I told him that I really appreciated his common-sense decision. He told me which lift I could use after I finished my work – have to tell security when I leave the building.
I immediately re-sent the document to my colleague and my alternative e-mail addresses. I waited until it’s in my Sent folder and it appeared in my alternative e-mail address. I sent the SMS to him that he should get the document by now.
Gone was my family Saturday’s plan. I know things happened. But, I’m sure we could prevent it if we have better network.
